This pillar is theoretical knowledge and understanding of health, disease, and self-care. The World Health Organization defines health literacy as representing “The cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways to promote and maintain good health”.

There are many different definitions of mental wellbeing, but they generally include areas such as life satisfaction, optimism, self-esteem, mastery, feeling in control, having a purpose in life, and a sense of belonging and support. The WHO defines mental health as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully.
